John 'Jack' Ward, 92, Former Peekskill Resident

John "Jack" Joseph Ward -- a Spring Hill, Florida, resident, formerly of Peekskill, died on Tuesday, Aug. 16. He was 92. Ward enlisted in the Navy when he was 18, and he served during World War II aboard the carrier USS Block Island. The carrier was sunk in the Atlantic on May 29, 1944, one week before the Normandy invasion and one week before his 20th birthday.

Community Eligibility Provision Provides Free Meals For Peekskill Students

The Peekskill City School District was recently awarded a federally funded breakfast and lunch provision that is available to all district students, from pre-K to grade 12. The district was able to apply for the Community Eligibility Option of the 2010 Hunger Free Kids Act because of the large number of students attending Peekskill City School District who met previous guidelines for free or reduced meals, according to a release from the Peekskill City School District. The program is effective immediately, and every child from pre-K through grade 12 attending a Peekskill City School District site will receive a free breakfast and free lunch, the release said.

Churches in Pleasantville, Peekskill Awarded Grants From Conservancy Group

St. John's Episcopal Church in Pleasantville and St. Peter's Church in Peekskill were two of 14 churches that received site grants from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. The conservancy awarded $25,000 to St. John's Episcopal Church in Pleasantville to assist with roofing, masonry and drainage repairs to the church and parish hall, and $25,000 to St. Peter's Church in Peekskill to assist with restoration of the slate roof, bell tower structural frame, roof and masonry.
