Alice P. Ober, teacher and volunteer at Ladew Topiary Gardens, dies

Alice P. Ober, a retired kindergarten teacher who was a longtime volunteer at Ladew Topiary Gardens, died Sunday of complications from dementia at her Monkton farm. She was 87. The daughter of Raeburn H. Parker, treasurer of Air Corp. Co., and Alice Lawrence Parker, a second cousin of Winston Churchill, Alice Parker was born in New York City and raised in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. She attended Kent Place School in Summit, N.J., and the Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence, R.I., and graduated from St. Mary's School in Peekskill, N.Y. Mrs. Ober opened Parker's Place, a preschool in Tuxedo Park, and later became a full-time kindergarten teacher at the Brick Church School on Park Avenue in New York City.

Peekskill Councilwoman Vivian McKenzie accused several individuals at Tuesday's meeting of covering up details regarding the investigation into the alleged break-in at City Hall last month, in addition to trying to draw attention away from the matter by targeting her in a leak investigation, according to the Peekskill Post. McKenezie stated her displeasure with a letter to the city manager, the city attorney and other council members, stating she believed the public had a right to know the details of the break-in and demanded a long list of items, including receipts, contracts and payments issued by the city, in addition to a host of other items, said the Peekskill Post.

Preservation Company Hopes To Retain Peekskill Grant

Representatives of The Preservation Company hope to be able to retain more than $313,00 in Community Block Grants, despite a recommendation from the town's corporation counsel for the Common Council to rescind a resolution that allows them to disperse the money to Peekskill families in need, according to the Peekskill Post. Corporation Counsel Melissa Ferraro, who made the recommendation, said that until the company can get out from under a cloud of suspicion following the discovery that they had incorrectly awarded money from the grant to Deputy Mayor Drew Claxton and her son in 2007, it would not be prudent for the city to be in business with the organization, said the Peekskill Post.

Ronald George Paul, loving husband and father, resident of Peekskill, NY, died peacefully surrounded by his family and friends with much love after unexpected complications at New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital on Wednesday, January 27, 2016. He was 52. Ronald is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah Ottaviano Paul of 24 years and his four daughters, Julia, Olivia, Veronica and Isabelle Paul.

"The Golden Dream," which follows three teens as they try to escape the slums of Guatemala for a better life in the United States, will be screened at the Peekskill Film Festival.
