Born in Peekskill, the son of the late Michael and Barbara Kohut, Joseph had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star Medal, as well as in the Air Force during the Korean War. He graduated from St. Jerome's College in Ontario and attended Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and was ordained a Catholic priest on May 26, 1962.
